Kongsgård ruin fra middelalderen/ Royal manor ruin

Harald Hårfagre gjorde Avaldsnes til sitt hovedsete etter slaget i Hafrsfjord ca. 870 e. Kr. Siden fortsatte Avaldsnes å være kongsgård for Haralds etterkommere fram til ca. 1400. En av disse var Håkon Håkonsson som bygget Olavskirken ca. 1250. Kirken var et viktig stoppested for pilegrimer som skulle til St. Olavs grav i Nidaros. Sommeren 2017 gravde Kongsgårdprosjektet fram hovedbygningen i den kongsgården som stod på Avaldsnes i høymiddelalderen. Den ble trolig påbegynt av Håkon Håkonsson og fullført av Håkon V Magnusson. I det ytre havneområdet på Avaldsnes hadde hanseatene sin handelsstasjon Nottow. Det endte til sist med at hanseatene satt fyr på kongsgården i 1368.

Håkon Håkonsson was one of the kings residing at Avaldsnes, where he built the St. Olav’s church in approx. 1250 a.d. The church was an important stop for the pilgrims on their way to visit St. Olav’s grave in Nidaros.
The Royal Manor project started excavations in the summer of 2017, excavating the main building of the royal manor complex that was at Avaldsnes during the 13th century. It was probably started by Håkon Håkonsson and finished by Håkon V Magnusson. In the outer harbour of Avaldsnes was the important Hanseatic trading station Nottow. The Hanseatic set fire to the royal manor at Avaldsnes in 1368.
